Survey – Firsts

I normally try to avoid surveys, but it’s a heavy night and I’m not sure I want to delve into the past in detail. We’ll see what come of this survey.

1. Who was your FIRST prom date?

I went to my first prom with a neighborhood kid name Tommy.  Ha ha, we had sorta dated way back. As much as you can “date” someone at the age of 11 when the furthest you can go is two blocks down the road. Anyhow, we grew apart, but every once in a while we would both be hangin’ out and get to talking. It was my junior year, he was a senior. I was dating sorta dating Kelly, he was sorta crushin’ on me. I didn’t go to make Kelly jealous or anything (although it did), I went cause he was an old friend. Truth be told he reminded me of the days when things were a little more innocent. Maybe a little more simple. Whatever, the point is…it wasn’t romantic.

2. Do you still talk to your FIRST love?

That’s a trick question right there. Believe it or not, I would have to qualify my first love as Taylor. I hear talk of him once in a while. I think we even might have been at the same party once or twice after high school. We don’t really talk, though.

3. What was your FIRST alcoholic drink?

When I was young, for a short while, I hung out with a small group of neighborhood girls. It didn’t last long. They weren’t the cool crowd, or the jocks, or the geeks, or any other high school group. The bond was the neighborhood. Somehow when you were inside the neighborhood, none of that clique stuff mattered.

Anyhow, we thought we were real bad. My friend stole two wine coolers from her parents fridge. Two wine coolers between six or seven of us. Oooh, we were so bad ass.

4. What was your FIRST job?

My first job was working at the corner store a few blocks from my house. Crazy ass shit.

5. What was your FIRST car?

My first car, was a ’66 Ford Mustang. I wanted a Mustang just like all the guys in the neighborhood had growing up. Stephen bought me the ’66 from his aunt. He gave it to me for our one year anniversary and my birthday. They were three days apart.

Prior to my sophomore year in college, I drove my parents Buick tank around.

6. Who was the FIRST person to text you today?

My girl friend. The love of my life.

7. Who is the FIRST person you thought of this morning?

That would, also, be my girlfriend.

8. Who was your FIRST grade teacher?

Mrs. Carman

9. Where did you go on your FIRST ride on an airplane?

California. Remind me to tell you about California some time.

10. Who was your FIRST best friend & do you still talk?

Did Rachel tell you we had been friends way back when we were little kids. Yeah, she lived right across the street from my from the time I was 3 and 1/2. I guess that would make her my first best friend. And, of course, we still talk.

11. Where was your FIRST sleepover?

Remember those girls I was tellin’ you about. The wine cooler girls. I’m pretty sure my first sleep over was at one of their houses.

12. Who was the FIRST person you talked to today?

I don’t mean to be redundant, but it was my girlfriend.

13. Whose wedding were you in the FIRST time?

I was in my cousin Renee’s wedding when I was 3. I don’t remember a damn thing.

14. What was the FIRST thing you did this morning?

Besides kiss my girlfriend? Umm, I took a shower.

15. What was the FIRST concert you ever went to?

The first concert, I guess would technically be Rachel’s brother’s band. What were they called? It was something like Jack Hammer, but not. Beating Daniel. Well, you can see why they didn’t get far.

16. FIRST tattoo?

It’s a freedom knot at the middle of my lower back.

17. First piercing?

I went straight for the tongue.

18. First foreign country you’ve been to?

Canada.

19. FIRST movie you remember seeing?

In theaters? E.T. It scared the shit outta me, don’t tell anyone.

20. When was your FIRST detention?

Oh god, umm, I got caught cutting school. Or rather, I got caught sneaking back into school after cutting class. I was a mess in high school.

21. What was the first state you lived in?

New York

22. Who was your FIRST roommate?

I actually had three. We had one of those two doubles connected with a common room thing going on. It was some miracle of housing at Bay State. So, the other person in my double was this girl Michelle. I had actually known her from elementary school, but then she moved away from town. I think I freaked her out. The person she knew in elementary school was so different from the person I was going into college.

I had two more roommates. Karen, who was awesome. We had many late night bonding sessions. We were both a hot mess like whoa, but I think we managed to not feed each other’s messes okay. Just nice to have someone else who got it.

Number three was Karen’s double mate, Laura. Laura was just pretty much never home. I think Karen saw her during the day (they were both acting majors), but she was never home. I didn’t ask questions. Maybe I should have.

…but don’t you want to know more? Why do these surveys never ask the real questions?

A. Where did you give your FIRST blow job?

Down by the water falls. The first, last, and only one. You wanna know who? Well, that’s a whole other blog entry.

B. Who lit your FIRST j?

That woulda been Mikey Douglas. Wait, the statute of limitations would be up on something like that, right?

Come on…..aren’t we getting to the real memories?

C. Who was the FIRST person to hold your hair while you puked from drinking yourself stupid?

Kelly. And I was so incredibly stupid.

D. Where were you the FIRST time you had to fend off a neighborhood boys advances while playing hide and go seek?

I was hiding behind the shed in the Callari’s back yard.

E. Who was your FIRST? (you know…)?

Who took my virginity? Is that what you’re asking? Taylor. Taylor took it in the mechanical sense. In that he was the first person to penetrate me.

Kelly was the first person I gave it to willingly.

Sorry, have I said too much?

Maddy and Kelly finally called it quits in March of ’95. I can’t say that I was sad about it. I had broken up with Lyn early March, and she had immediately started dating my (former) best friend. I can’t say I was torn up or anything. I knew it had been coming. We had [...]

She was so mad at me, we didn't even say goodbye. About a month into the semester I heard she was dating Stephen. Here's the thing. I knew it was coming, the end of our relationship. I was ready for it. It stung more than I was ready for, though. We didn't talk for almost a year after that.

I walked out on her. I did. She wanted to get married and I walked out on her. Have you ever done something that seems absolutely horrible, but known it was the only choice you had at the time?

  • I Told You February 17, 2009
We made love that morning to wash away all the dirt and grime of the past. I understand that now. It was our first time, and our last. I can't lie, it was intense. We worked out all that was wrong in the world until we were cleansed. After noon some time Maddy headed home. We would stay together officially for the next few weeks, but in reality we were […]

  • Defining Moments February 17, 2009
I was washing her hair, and talking to her. I don't remember what I was saying, though I know I was just making chatter. I just remember sitting on the edge of the tub with my feet in the water washing her hair and thinking this is my life. In so many ways, this was the realization of what my life was to become. I understood for the first time what it m […]

  • That Summer Night February 17, 2009
That night. It is forever emblazoned in my mind. It is a memory I share with a few people, and yet our views are all so different. It was a party on the far side of the reservoir. A pre-graduation party. Everyone was there. Maddy and I were there with Stephen. Kelly was there with her boyfriend, Jimmy.

Our first conversations were full of evasion. She was a mystery wrapped inside an enigma. At first she seemed angry, but not so elusive. The next attempt to talk was a quick shoot down.

  • The Friendship February 16, 2009
I sat down next to her and contemplated the moon. She just leaned over and put her head on my shoulder. I couldn't think of a single appropriate thing to say. So, I didn't.

  • What I don’t know… February 16, 2009
This project is about my friend Maddy. It is an exploration of new modern writing mediums, a multi viewed story of my friend Maddy. Now what I don't know about Maddy could fill Giants Stadium. So, I'll start at the beginning.

What do you think it’s going to be like to empty all these stories into the public eye? I am a little scared as to what we will find at the end of this journey. I can see this project growing, but with so much work ahead. Let the stories roll. Let the questions flow.
